What is a dental crown?

A crown is a “cap” that fits over and around a tooth to protect it, reinforce it and enhance its appearance. To make room for it, some tooth structure must be removed, but once cemented into position, it makes the tooth much stronger and better looking than before. As a protective measure, and also a cosmetic one, dental crowns are a keystone of restorative dentistry in North Ryde and Macquarie Park, and throughout the Northern Suburbs.

What are dental crowns used for?

Dental crowns are often needed to protect broken or fractured teeth from further damage. Once a tooth is 70 % filling, it needs a crown. Often after endodontic treatments (such as root canal filling), you may need a crown on top of your tooth, to protect it. You might also need it to hold your dental bridge, to cover a discoloured tooth or dental implant, or if you want some cosmetic adjustments.

There are many benefits of crowns; they feel like natural teeth, they match the colour and texture of surrounding teeth and they look authentic. They allow you to regain full dental function and are made of durable materials. Our North Ryde dentists use only the dental crowns that are built to last.

What are the most common types of dental crowns?

There are numerous types of dental crowns and the type you choose should depend on your personal needs and recommendations from your dentist. Currently, dental crowns are made of several materials, most common being stainless steel, gold or other alloys, ceramic, porcelain/precious metal combo, resin, glass, etc.

Dental crowns that are made of stainless steel are usually prefabricated and used as temporary crowns until your permanent crowns are made and placed. Gold (or platinum) metal crowns are not that popular these days due to high prices and metallic colour that does not look natural. They are sometimes used for molars and other back teeth. Resin crowns are typically not that durable while precious metal-bonded porcelain is the most common material combination. The most popular dental crowns for patients who are allergic to metal are all-ceramic and all-porcelain ones because they look very natural and are suitable both for back and front teeth.

How do we prepare a tooth for a dental crown?

The dental crown placement procedure often requires two visits* to the dentist. First, we will examine the shape and condition of your tooth and prepare it for dental crown placement procedure (we will have to reshape it so that that the crown can be placed and cemented properly). We will also make a tooth and an opposing tooth impression or mould using a special kind of paste and make sure to send the adequate colouring information to our local dental laboratory so that a dental crown looks as natural and authentic as possible. During your second visit, we will place the permanent dental crown. Don’t worry – the procedure is usually painless because we make sure to numb the area with an appropriate anesthetic. Don’t be reluctant to give us a call if you want to find out more details about the procedure itself!

*In case we determine the extensive decay or other issue is present, we will probably suggest root canal procedure first and once the treatment is done, we will proceed with the dental crown placement.
